He has played with Mesut Oil, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, Petr Cech but Jay Okocha remains Alex Iwobi’s mentor in football.
Okocha who made 75 appearances for Nigeria, scoring 15 goals, is regarded as one of the finest players of his generation
The Everton forward who is a nephew of Okocha says the former Bolton man is still his biggest inspiration in football.
The 23-year-old revealed in an interview on Super Eagles youtube page where he also said a lot of things about his life. The former Arsenal star said Okocha is not only his biggest inspiration on the pitch but also off the pitch.
“Well, I would always use my uncle as inspiration, even till this day, he’s still my inspiration.” Nowadays, it’s more about what he tells me, how to carry myself off the pitch, Iwobi said.
Growing up, Iwobi revealed he was advised by his uncle to always enjoy himself on the pitch.
“When I was younger, he told me to always express myself, not follow in his footsteps, but try to enjoy football the same way he did, but nowadays it’s just about how to carry myself off the pitch.
And it looks like Iwobi is taking his uncle’s advice so far. The 23-year-old is on course to break the number of caps Okocha won for Nigeria. The Everton star has made 40 appearances for Nigeria, scoring seven goals.
