World Best National Coach Award: Good News For Gernot Rohr As IFFHS Rates Super Eagles Coach

After a three-year spell managing the Nigeria national football team, the German tactician has seen his stock soar ever so highly as he has been named among the top twenty national team coaches in the world.

German-based organisation International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) has ranked Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr among the world’s twenty finest national team tacticians for 2019.

The Super Eagles under Gernot Rohr finished in third place at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournament held in Egypt and won nine of their 14 overall games this year – losing just two matches – and winning their last two against Benin and Lesotho.

Coach of Portugal national team, Fernando Santos, has however been named as the recipient of the 2019 World’s Best National Coach Award. The Portuguese led his country to win the UEFA Nations League in June 2019. It is the second time he would be winning after first claiming the honours in 2016, when he guided Portugal to lifting the UEFA Euro Cup.

Brazil’s Tite and Belgium’s Roberto Martinez came second and third respectively on the global ranking.

Coach Rohr would however be pleased with his joint-nineteenth ranking placing him as the fourth best coach in Africa as voted for by football experts and journalists from 90 countries of all continents in the world.

The most highly rated African head coach is that of Algeria, Djamel Belmadi who got into the top five with 61 points, followed by Madagascar’s French coach Nicolas Dupuis in 10th with 11 points and Senegal coach Aliou Cisse ranked 18th with two points.
