After missing the September and October international friendly due to a three month ban, Lionel Messi made a goalscoring return to the Argentina National team as La Albiceleste defeated arch-rivals, Brazil in a Superclasico trophy match played at Saudi Arabia.
The Barcelona captain has not played for Argentina since the Copa America after he was banned by CONMEBOL for questioning the integrity of the organization.
However, despite the three month absence, Messi made a goalscoring return as he scored the only goal of the match. The 32-year-old finished off a penalty rebound after Alisson Becker had saved his initial kick.
Brazil also had a penalty of their own and should have taken the lead in the tenth minute, but Gabriel Jesus could only drag his effort wide.
With the win, Messi has now won a trophy with Argentina although it is not recognised by FIFA. However, Messi will have the chance to win his first major trophy with La Albiscelste when they host next year’s Copa America along with Colombia.
