“Why Chelsea deserved to win against Osimhen’s Lille”

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen headed in a fine goal to cancel out Tammy Abraham’s opener but Willian netted a late winner to earn Frank Lampard’s team a ‘deserved’ victory.

Chelsea boss Lampard has admitted that his men had to step up their game to overcome their host on Wednesday night as goals from Abraham and William either side of an Osimhen header proved enough to secure their first points of the Champions League.

The Blues lost on home soil to Valencia on matchday 1 and needed victory badly in France to get their season back on track in Europe and after claiming a narrow win at a tough ground, a delighted Frank Lampard expressed his satisfaction with his team’s performance.

‘There is a long way to go in the group but having lost against Valencia it put more importance on this game,’ noted Lampard.

‘It’s such a tough place to come, anyone in the stadium would have felt that. The roof was on, the crowd were up for it, the speed in their team in a counter-attacking sense was very evident, something we had to be ready for.

‘Our performance was really good. We controlled a lot of the early periods of the game, we got our goal. Set-pieces are a problem for us and we have to keep working on that even more.

‘But the way we played, the chances we created away from home, the possession we had of the ball, meant we deserved to win.’
