Weekly Round Up: Chukwueze’s Kopa Nomination And New Deal, Tomori’s Confession Plus Other Big Stories

It has indeed been an eventful week in football both on and off the pitch over the last seven days.

And as part of our tradition, Soccernet.ng brings a recap of some of the biggest stories you may have missed in the past week.

Samuel Chukwueze’s Brilliant Week: He did not score on the pitch, but it was still a perfect week for Nigeria’s golden boy. The 20-year-old was among the ten nominees for the Kopa Trophy, an award given out by France Football for the best U-21 player in Europe. It did not stop there as he signed a new contract at Villarreal with a release clause of 100m Euros.

Super Eagles Drop In Latest FIFA Rankings: It was expected the draw against the third ranked team in the world would shoot Super Eagles in FIFA rankings, but that was not the case as they dropped one spot in the latest ranking. Gernot Rohr’s side dropped to the 35th position from the 34th position they occupied last month. It also means the Super Eagles have dropped in consecutive months despite the impressive draws against Ukraine and Brazil.

Golden Eaglets Begins Quest for Sixth World Title: Nigeria’s U-17 began their quest for a sixth world title with a 4-2 victory over their Hungarian counterparts on Saturday night in Brazil. However, it was not as easy as the scoreline suggested. Gyorgy Komaromi put the Hungarians ahead in the third minute before Samson Tijani restored parity from the penalty spot 13 minutes later.

Hungary took the lead again in the 28th minute through Samuel Major, bur three late goals in the second half from Usman Ibrahim, Oluwatimilehin Adeniyi and Samson Tijani ensured Nigeria took the full points.

Tomori Reveals Why He Snubbed Nigeria: The Chelsea defender has revealed he chose England ahead of Nigeria because the Three Lions were the only team that showed interest in him. Tomori who was called up to the England national team this month revealed it was a dream come true for him.

Liverpool, United Win But Arsenal Drop Points:  After they both played a 1-1 draw last week, both United and Liverpool picked up maximum points with victory over Norwich and Spurs respectively. The Red Devils win against the Canaries was their first away from home in the league this season.

Leaders, Liverpool had to come back from a goal down to see off the challenge of Tottenham. The win ensured the Reds regained their six point lead over Man City. Meanwhile, Arsenal blew away a two goal lead against Crystal Palace on Sunday. The Gunners scored two quickfire goals through Sokratis and David Luiz, but Palace ensured the points will be shared with goals from Milivojevic and Jordan Ayew.
