Manchester United Goalkeeper Gifts Liverpool Three Points As Klopp’s Men Go Eight Clear Of City

Liverpool made it sixteenth straight win and seven from seven this campaign as an error from Manchester United’s on-loan goalkeeper at Sheffield United gifted the Reds full maximum points to go eight clear of Man City who play Everton later.

Liverpool who were unchanged from the side that defeated Chelsea last weekend expectedly dominated proceedings from start but it was the Blades who had the first chance of the match through Oli Oli McBurnie, but his shot was straight at Adrian.

The Reds continued to dominate possession but were finding it difficult to create clear cut chances as Sheffield United defended resiliently.

Chris Wilder’s side were happy to see the Reds pass the ball around but were also dangerous on the break. Despite the Reds dominating possession they struggled to break down Sheffield’s defence, and it was not until the 26th they had their first real chance on goal.

Mo Salah nipped in to take the ball off Enda Stevens’ but his effort was dragged wide. The chance appeared to open things up for Klopps’s side and should have taken the lead moments later through Sadio Mane who was sent through on goal following a long ball from Virgil Van Dijk, but the Senegalese international effort was high and wide.

The chances kept coming for Liverpool and should have taken the lead once again through Sadio Mane. With just two minutes before the break left, the former Southampton man was found by Roberto Firmino in the box, but his effort could only find the post with Firmino failing to finish off the rebound.  It was a big let-off for Sheffield as both sides went into the break levelled.

The second half began with Liverpool on the front foot once again but it Sheffield who had the first chance through the dangerous Olie McBurnie.  The Scotland international got on the end of a corner kick but could not keep his header low.

Liverpool had penalty shouts after Sadio Mane was tripped in the box by Lundstram, but Referee Anthony Taylor waved play on.

Chris Wilder’s side continued to hold their own and they almost took the lead against the run of play after Oliver Norwood found the target from long range, but Adrian was up to the task.

The Blades were dangerous on the break and should have been ahead once again, but Andy Robertson did superbly well to block Fleck’s shot.

However, despite Sheffield’s brilliance, it was Liverpool who will eventually break the deadlock although through an error from Dean Henderson. The goalkeeper who is on loan from Manchester United allowed Gini Wijnaldum’s weak effort slip under his grasp to give Klopp’s men an unlikely lead.

It was cruel on Sheffield but Liverpool did not care as they almost added a second following another error from Sheffield’s defence. Mo Salah capitalized on a poor back pass to race through on goal, but Henderson made amends for his earlier error by thwarting the Egyptian.

Despite going down, Sheffield kept going on and should have drawn level through Leon Clarke but the English man could not keep his effort low.

It proved to be the last chance of the match as the Reds held on for an unlikely win. Liverpool now turn their attentions to the Champions League as they take on Redbull Salzburg on Wednesday.
