“We have to eat poison”, Pep Guardiola on VAR controversy

The Spaniard saw his team surrender their lead twice against Tottenham only to watch in agony as VAR chalked off a late, late Gabriel Jesus goal for handball.

Sterling headed in the opener off a precise De Bruyne cross but Lamela equalized for the visitors immediately.

The magnificent De Bruyne then threaded a neat final pass for Aguero to restore City’s lead but Lucas Moura nodded home another equalizer seconds after coming off the bench.

Substitute Jesus then thought he had given the Citizens all the three points with the last kick of the game, but VAR called it a no-goal.

It left a bitter taste on the City manager whose side dominated the encounter from start to finish.

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, the Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, said:

“That’s what it is [VAR]. We have to accept it. I would like to win, we had an incredible performance. The amount of shots…its an emotion for me.

“We respect the football we want to play. I don’t have regrets. We have to eat poison and think about the next game.

“What can I say? I would like to win for the chances we create but we didn’t.

“I am not going to judge the team performance against the goals we conceded. We had 30 shots.”
