Nigeria Stars Abroad: New Super Eagles invitee, Obi Mikel, Ola Aina advance in the Europa League

The second leg third qualifying round of the Europa League have been played across Europe with some Nigeria players involved in the thick of the action.

From Scotland to Finland, Soccernet takes a trip round Europe to bring you the exploits of Nigeria stars abroad.

Joe Aribo and Sheyi Ojo, Rangers 3-1 FC Midtjylland (6-3, agg.)

Rangers FC, where new Super Eagles invitee Joe Aribo ply his trade, advanced to the next round of the Europa League courtesy of a fine 3-1 victory on the night and a 6-3 aggregate win over the Danes.

Joe Aribo, however, spent the entire night on the bench.

But Super Eagles hopeful and Liverpool loaned, Sheyi Ojo had another splendid evening after scoring one and assisting both Alfredo Morelos goals as Steven Gerrard’s side cruised to victory.

Ola Aina, Shakhtyor Soligorsk 1-1 Torino (1-6, agg)

The 2019 AFCON bronze medalist started from the bench and was introduced in the 62nd minute as the Italian side advanced at the expense of the Belarusians.

Someone Zaza’s 80th minute strike gave Torino the lead but Yanush’s stoppage time penalty saved the home side’s blushes.

Torino qualified having won 6-1 on aggregate.

Umar Sadiq, Yeni Malatyaspor 1-0 Partizan Beograd (2-3, agg.)

The 22-year-old Nigeria striker on-loan from AS Roma fired blanks as his club, Partizan, were gunned down in Turkey by a seventh minute Jahovic strike.

But it is the Serbians who proceeded to the next round, having done enough to protect their 3-1 first leg lead. Umar scored the opener in that tie.

John Obi Mikel and Anthony Nwakaeme, Trabzonspor 2-1 Sparta Prague (4-3, agg.)

The retired Super Eagles skipper saw action for the last ten minutes of the game to help the home side overcome the opposition from the Czech capital.

Obi Mikel was shown a yellow card after just 2 minutes after of being on the pitch.

Soerloth’s first half goal and a dramatic last minute winner from Filip Novak lifted Unal Karaman’s men over the visitors, who were reduced to ten men in the 88th.

Nigeria forward Nwakaeme was on from start to finish but Super Eagles midfield enforcer, Eddy Onazi did not make the match day squad as he continues his recovery from a long-term injury.

Faith Friday Obilor, HJK 2-2 Riga (3-3, agg)

The Nigeria defender played every single minute for the hosts but could not stop T Koskela’s men from getting knocked out of the Europa League.

HJK’s Petteri Forsell scored first and supplied the assist for Vaeyrynen’s second but a brace from Riga’s Debelko ensured honours were shared.

Finland’s HJK had picked up a fine 1-1 draw away to Riga but the away goal rule sees the Latvian side proceed to the next round.
