Former England star blasts Super Eagles’ Alex Iwobi for lacking quality

Ex-England international Darren Bent has questioned the quality of the Nigeria playmaker following his switch to Everton from Arsenal.

The 22-year-old moved to Goodison Park last week from Arsenal on a five-year deal for an initial fee of £28 million, rising to £34 million.

Bent, a former Aston Villa striker and a self professed Arsenal fan, believes the attacking options the Toffees have are better than the new addition.

The one-time Tottenham striker who managed only 13 appearances for the England national football team, scoring 4 goals in a six-year career admitted that Everton already had a better player than the Nigerian in Richarlison.

I’m an Arsenal fan and I’ve never been Iwobi’s biggest fan,” Bent told Football Insider.

“My thing with people has always been quality on the ball. Whether it was his final cross or his shot on goal, it was always under-hit or there was never really any quality there.

“He’d do the hard stuff, go past someone, and you’d want him to make the right decision, but he never seemed to get it right.

“I wouldn’t say he’s better than Richarlison because he gives you goals, he’s got a bit more quality.”

Alex Iwobi was a consistent performer for Unai Emery’s side last term, making 51 appearances across all competitions, scoring six goals and providing nine assists.

He also played a crucial role as the Super Eagles won a bronze medal at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations held in Egypt.

  • Darren bent should keep quiet and plan on his retirement he's a striker and scored just 106 goals in the top flight where as players like lukaku has scored more than him where as iwobi is not a striker or how many goals did hazard scored as a winger in England

  • Accept criticism in good faith. Iwobi badly needs to improve on his game. Let's consider the message and spare the messenger. Is Iwobi in need of an improvement? Yes he needs it urgently. He is still young to do that. Everton is going to be a fresh breath of air, and, with dedication, he should make Darren swallow his words in two years from now. Let's all encourage him on that path. Iwobi is our treasure, and we love him.
We all saw what Musa did, coming from Russia, where, for him, the air had become stale, to England and then back to Russia. The difference was clear and true stardom became apparent, until he moved in search of money to football start ups like Saudi Arabia. We all saw him perform at the recent African Cup of Nations finals hosted by Egypt. Did you notice any difference? In football, persistence and focus at improving one's game will bring in tonnes of the money, not the other way round. Ask Messi or Ronaldo. Iwobi, more hard work less partying does it. There is always time after a life on the pitch...

    • I agree completely. We have to be honest. Iwobi needs to work more on his final ball, scoring, consistency. If these were not an issue, Iwobi would be worth at least 60mil, not 30mil

  • If Bent had quality i wonder why he didnt score more goals or play for top football teams in European. Iwobi who is still aspiring for a greater future has already played for Arsenal which is bigger than any club Bent played for. Iwobi is still 23 and has a lot of room for improvement.

  • He just being jealous for the transfer fees ...can bent dribble a defender not to say given an accurate passes or has he became a journalist

  • Bent or whatever you call your name.If you have any personal issue with Iwobi, pls go and sort it out.You are a disgrace to English football.if Iwobi is an average player, he wouldn't have made arsenal first team bench, let alone playing regularly.Bent you should get this fact into your empty brain. At his stage he has played in the world cup, played in afcon and in one of the English best clubs. What a fuck Bent is talking about? He wants to feel relevance that is why he is talking rubbish on the air.Idotic bent.

  • Alex Iwobi has yet to fulfill his potential. He is a professional that looks like he is having a good time, and nothing else. I dont see never say die willingness to win for Arsenal, I certainly dont see it for the Super Eagles. Often careless with the final ball. He needs to take that next step.
