Carabao Cup: Iwobi On Target For Everton But Iheanacho’s Future At Leicester In Limbo

On his first start for the club, Alex Iwobi got off the mark for Everton as the Toffees came from behind to beat Lincoln FC 4-2 in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

The 23-year-old who joined the Merseyside Blues from Arsenal for 40m pounds was handed his first start by Marco Silva on Wednesday night.

The Super Eagles stars had missed Everton first two league games of the season but came on in the team’s 2-0 loss to Aston Villa last weekend.

After impressing against the Villans where he hit the post, Silva decided to hand him his full debut and he did not disappoint.

Lincoln took the lead in the opening 20 seconds through Harry Anderson who drove the ball past Jordan Pickford. But Everton responded through a sublime freekick from Lucas Digne, before Gylfi Sigurdsson put the Toffees ahead 15 minutes after the break.

But Lincoln will not go down without a fight, and they restored parity through Bruno Andrade’s volley. However, Alex Iwobi will break their resilience as he scored the winner, heading home from close range.

Richarlison settled any kind of nerves by heading home minutes after Iwobi’s goal. Speaking after the match, the Nigerian international revealed it was a tough match but they were prepared. He also added he’s enjoying time at his new club.

“It was a difficult game. Credit to Lincoln. The important thing is we’re through. We showed our fighting spirit. I’m enjoying this new chapter of my life. Every competition we take seriously.”

While Iwobi is enjoying is new chapter at Everton, it is not looking good for another Super Eagles star, Kelechi Iheanacho who was once again absent from Leicester’s squad that beat Newcastle on penalties last night.

The former Manchester City star has yet to feature for the Foxes this season despite appearing to turn his form around in preseason.

He was an unused substitute in Leicester’s first two league games but was not in the squad that won at Bramall Lane last weekend despite the Foxes dearth of striking options.

The 22-year-old would have hoped to get his chance in the Carabao Cup clash against the Magpies last night, but his hopes were once again dashed as he was not included in the squad.
