Iwobi Reveals If He Wants To Take Over Number 10 Jersey From Mikel

With John Mikel Obi retiring, the Super Eagles number 10 jersey is set to be vacant after the 2109 Africa Cup of Nations, but it hasn’t crossed Alex Iwobi mind to take it over.

The Arsenal star has been Mikel’s replacement in the number 10 role for the Super Eagles at this tournament wearing the number 18 jersey.

However, with Mikel set to retire after the tournament, there have been speculations Iwobi could be given the number 10 jersey.

But is not something Iwobi has thought about, saying he is only focused on making sure Nigeria ends the tournament on a high note. Speaking ahead of the Super Eagles third-place match against Tunisia, the Arsenal golden boy taking over the number 10 jersey is not something he has given a thought.

“I have not thought about inheriting Mikel’s NO.10 jersey my focus is on doing my best regardless of jersey number”.

In what was his first AFCON tournament for Nigeria, Iwobi believes he has had a good tournament but hopes he can end it on a high note by beating the Carthage Eagles in the third-place match.  He also believes the team has a bright future despite the disappointment of losing to Algeria in the semifinals.

We were disappointed to have lost in the semifinal and we felt down for a bit but at the end of the day, it’s another match and we have to go again. “I think I’ve done ok for my first AFCON  but I hope I can end on a good note. Our team is young and I believe the future is bright”.
