Gernot Rohr Reveals Who Will Replace Mikel In The Super Eagles

Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr has revealed the options to replace John Mikel Obi who retired from international football after Nigeria’s third-place victory over Tunisia at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Mikel had revealed in the early stages of the tournament that he will be ending his international career at the end of the competition. The former Chelsea man who did not play a part in last night’s victory over the Carthage Eagles revealed he is retiring so as to give a chance for the younger players.

With the Trabzonspor latest signing retiring, there have been questions on who will replace him in the number ten role he played for most his national team career.

Arsenal star Alex Iwobi filled in for him at the competition, but Rohr has revealed the 22-year-old is not the only option available to him. The German tactician revealed the likes of Semi Ajayi and Ogenekaro Etebo will be given a chance to fill the vacant slot.

He said this after Nigeria’s victory over Tunisia last night. “We have to salute Mikel’s great career, he didn’t play in the qualifiers but it was good for the team that he is here.”

“Now we have to look at others but we don’t have many MF in top clubs. We’ve Semi Ajayi, Iwobi, Etebo, Ndidi but we have to work hard to find a replacement. “
