CAF Expands Africa Women Cup of Nations, Changes Champions League Final Format

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the expansion of Africa Women Cup Of Nations from eight teams to 12 teams.  The African football governing body made this decision among many others in its exco meeting on Wednesday.

Previous editions of AWCON has seen eight teams of two groups represented, but this latest decision to increase the number of participating teams to 12, means more countries will get the chance to showcase their worth on the big stage.

The new plan follows the suit of the Africa Cup of Nations going on in Egypt, where for the first time in the history of the competition, 24 teams are represented as opposed to the 16 that had graced previous occasions.

Nigeria are the most successful team in AWCON winning the title 11 times out of the 13 times the competition has been staged.

Meanwhile, the Confederation of African Football has also announced the CAF champions league, and the CAF confederations cup finals will be a one-legged final at a neutral venue.

The final of the two club competitions have always been a two-legged affair, but CAF has decided to go the route of UEFA following the chaos that ensued in this year’s CAF champions league final between Esperance and Wydad Casablanca.
