The Democratic Republic of Congo will lock horns with the Cranes of Uganda in group A fixture of the Africa Cup of Nations at the Cairo International Stadium on Saturday.
With both teams seeking the maximum points in order to be placed in a comfortable standing ahead of their respective fixture against Egypt, it is expected that the encounter would be a dwell battle for points.
The champions of this tournament in 1968 and 1974, DR Congo will be making its 19th appearance in the finals. And with the likes of Cedric Bakambu and Yannick Bolasie, DR Congo has the pieces to have a real go and surprise teams in this tournament.
On the other hand, this will be Uganda’s 7th appearance in the finals and their best finish ever in the Africa Cup of Nations was a 2nd place finish in 1978, the only time they’ve made it past the group stage.
Uganda will be playing in back to back Africa Cup of Nations tournaments for the first time since qualifying three consecutive times from 1974-1978. The Cranes have the best goalkeeper in Africa in Dennis Onyango and they will need him to be at his best in order to have a fighting chance in their group.
Uganda Cranes head coach Sebastien Desabre believes they have to win their opening match if they are to go far in the competition.
“The most vital game for us is the game with Congo. Our first game can determine our fate. We must win the Congo game so that we play the rest with less pressure.
“Our ambitions are so high. And to win you have to take some risks. I have told my boys to play with confidence and take some risks while attacking. To win you must score which comes with taking risks.”
