Super Eagles Face Tough Test Against DR Congo Today

Ahead of the 2018 World Cup, Super Eagles of Nigeria will be hoping to extend a farewell gift to football lovers in Nigeria as they confront DR Congo in an international friendly game at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port-Harcourt today (Monday).

The game is expected to be Nigeria’s last game before departing for England, where they will play the Three Lions of England in a World Cup warm-up friendly match.

Statistically, Nigeria has played DR Congo six times in all competitions since 1966, winning five and losing one.

However, tonight’s encounter will give Super Eagles technical adviser, Gernot Rohr a chance to assess some players before deciding on his 23-man squad that will represent Nigeria at the World Cup in Russia.

With the invited 30 players in camp, Rohr will be hoping to maintain a good record, having won eight, drawn four and lost two games in all competitions since taking over as manager in 2015.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles captain and midfielder, Mikel Obi has revealed that the players should be expecting a tough test against DR Congo.

“We do not expect the Congolese to be easy opposition. They have a strong team made up of very talented players and we know this is one good opposition for us to confront before going to the World Cup.

“The FIFA World Cup is no picnic. We have to arrive in Russia with a winning mentality and you get that feeling of being ready only after beating strong team.”
