Former Golden Eaglets goalkeeper, Dele Ajiboye says if the Super Eagles must beat the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in a 2018 World Cup on August 28, the technical adviser, Gernot Rohr must not toil with the team’s selection.
It will be recalled that Nigeria lost 2-0 to the Bafana of South Africa in their opening fixture of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on June 10, their first in a competitive game.
The defeat which has been blamed on Rohr’s selection tactics by some football pundits in the country has placed the Super Eagles third on Group E table of the qualifier.
With the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Cameroon on August 28 getting closer, the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup winner with the Golden Eaglets told Soccernet.com.ng
that Rohr should get his selection right if the team must get a win.
“I must confess to you that the Super Eagles lost 2-0 to Bafana of South Africa because the coach (Gernot Rohr) made a wrong selection in that encounter. There are certain players such as Kayode Olarenwaju and Victor Osimhen that should have been used as a striker instead of Kelechi Iheanacho,” Ajiboye told Soccernet.com.ng.
“Besides, this idea of blaming Daniel Akpeyi for the two goals the team conceded was wrong because the defence didn’t shield him properly. It’s a goal that can beat any goalkeeper at any giving point in time.
“Since the error has been made, I expect the coach to learn from his mistakes and approach the game against Cameroon with the right selection if the team must pick the three points. This is important because we have seen what they can do at the ongoing Confederations Cup in Russia.”
