Nigeria youth international Taiwo Awoniyi scored his first ever senior goal in Europe when he banged in the 89th minute winner for NEC Nijmegen in their 2-1 defeat of AZ Alkmaar in the Dutch Eredivisie on Sunday.
Awoniyi, who is on loan from Liverpool, has failed to score a senior goal since moving to Europe, and although he has been scoring for Nijmegen’s youth sides, he wasn’t able to replicate that form for the seniors until on Sunday, and the striker has been speaking of his excitement.
“I also had a very good feeling, but I was also happy for the team. Because it was an important goal for everyone, we won again and that was a long time ago.
“God is the best in life. For everything that happens in my life I give him the glory. Whether it goes well or bad. But he helped me and the team today.”
The 20-year old has scored five goals in six games for the Nijmegen reserves, but didn’t find the back of the net for the senior side until the winner against Alkmaar.
