The role Moses and I play at Chelsea – Alonso

Marcos Alonso says the wing back roles occupied by himself and Nigeria’s Victor Moses provide the balance between attack and defence for Chelsea who are home to relegation battlers Hull City on Sunday in a EPL match day 22 fixture.

Alonso made his full debut for the Blues in the reverse fixture against the Tigers back in October, and has started every Premier League game since.

The former Fiorentina man who spent the 2014 season on loan at Sunderland scoredtwo goals in one game for the first time in his career when he played at the King Power Stadium.

He and Moses caused the home side a number of problems with their attacking play and the Spaniard believes the fact he played in a similar role during his time in Italy has helped him settle into Conte’s favoured 3-4-3 formation quickly.

“I think it is a good balance for the team. There was no need for us to talk to each other before about what we were going to do.

“A lot of games he [Moses] goes more forward and I maybe stay more at the back, but that also depends on how the other team plays and it’s good to have variation and different options.

“Victor is doing a great job and hopefully we can keep helping the team as we have been doing in the previous games.

“It’s not so different from how I was used to playing at Fiorentina, so it was easy to adapt when I first came here, but there are some different aspects that we have been working on with the manager. But I think it’s not too far from the football I played last year,” said the 26-year old defender.

The Spaniard and the Nigerian face plenty of important games and Hull City are the visitors to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, with Antonio Conte’s side looking to build on last weekend’s impressive 3-0 win at Leicester.

Sunday’s game is the first of two at home in a week, with an FA Cup fourth round tie against Brentford to follow next Saturday.

Next up in the Premier League after Hull is a trip to Liverpool on 31 January, and a win against Marco Silva’s side would set Moses and Alonso up nicely for a huge game at Anfield.
