3 Possible destinations for Chelsea’s Mikel Obi

John Obi Mikel has been a name synonymous with Chelsea FC for over a decade now. The Nigerian has notched up 249 appearances for the London club, scoring a solitary goal in the West London Derby against Fulham in 2013/14. Despite averaging 25 appearances a season in the league up until last season, the fan favourite at Stamford Bridge has been out of favour with new Chelsea boss Antonio Conte favouring a midfield pairing of N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic. Yet to take the field this season for the Blues, the 29-year-old is looking for a way out in January for guaranteed first team football.
Here we look at 3 Premier League teams that can be a possible destination for the Nigerian in January.

WEST HAM UNITED

The East Londoners have been struggling this campaign after a flying performance last season which saw them finish 7th, ahead of big guns like Liverpool and Chelsea. Currently residing in the 17th position, the Hammers have the third worst defensive record this season. With Spaniard Pedro Obiang not being able to provide confidence in the defensive third, Mikel can be a welcome addition alongside the likes of Cheikhou Kouyate and club captain Mark Noble. With his experience and ability, Slaven Bilic’s side can definitely improve upon the current situation.

LEICESTER CITY

The Premier League holders have been struggling to replicate their form of last season which they displayed en route to their historic triumph. With the departure of Frenchman N’Golo Kante to Chelsea, a huge void has been left at the centre of the midfield which is yet to be accounted for. John Obi Mikel can very much be the man the Champions can look to solve their woes. With Leicester on the verge of advancing to the round of 16 in the UCL, the prospect of Champions League football can also be an added incentive for the Nigerian. Ironically, he will have the chance to establish his authority on the position of a player who took his place at Chelsea.

CRYSTAL PALACE

Yet another Premier League team who have struggled real hard this season with their defensive organisation are South East Londoners Crystal Palace. Currently sitting a point above the drop zone they have conceded 19 goals in 11 matches this season. The addition of the Nigerian will be a handsome addition to the squad and will help solidify the centre of midfield along side the likes of James McArthur, Joe Ledley and Yohan Cabaye.
