Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi has declared that the team isn’t ready to relinquish their position at the top of group B after beating Zambia 2-1 in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Ndola on Sunday.
The three-time African champions claimed maximum points thanks to goals from Premiership duo Kelechi Iheanacho and Alex Iwobi. Nigeria’s rivals Algeria and Cameroon played out a 1-1 draw to remain second and third in the group with one point apiece.
Mikel, who was part of the team that took the Super Eagles to the round of 16 of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, insisted that the players are determined to pick the automatic ticket.
“We have a very good chance to qualify for the World Cup if we keep our heads and play at our best level. Each and every one of us is determined to go to the World Cup. Now that we are top of the table, we have to remain there,” Mikel told thenff.com
“I have belief that we can reach new heights with this team. The boys are so committed that it makes you happy. The coaching crew is made up of very matured and brilliant people who respect the players. We are onto a good thing.”
Nigeria will face Algeria on November 12 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium and another three points would extend the team lead on the log.
