Romelu Lukaku punished Sunderland with three goals at the Stadium of
Light on Monday, to move Everton up to third in the Premier League
table.
Lukaku had not scored a Premier League goal since March, he (Lukaku)
had been having one of those miserable sequence in front of goal, with a
drought stretching back to the FA Cup quarter-final against Chelsea on
March 12.
But having scored twice for Belgium against Cyprus during the
international break. Moyes knew this was going to be a difficult
evening, facing an Everton team on the up, but he did not expect it to
turn into a calamity as Lukaku took full advantage of some horrendous
defending, plundering two headers and taking the match ball with a
thumping left foot finish that showed what he can be when in the mood.
Lukaku opening the scoring with a powerful header from Idrissa
Gueye’s cross. His second, which followed him rattling the woodwork with
a thumping drive; was dispatched after Bolaise floated in a perfect
ball from the left but Lukaku was not finished and he registered his
first treble for Everton since February 2015 when Kevin MIrallas sent
him scuttling clear.
The Belgian celebrated by looking to the heavens; in his seat Moyes
looked to the floor. And those contrasting images captured it all
perfectly.
