Player Ratings: Barcelona 1-2 Alaves

FC Barcelona 1-2 Deportivo Alaves – Player Ratings

It was a terrible night at the Camp Nou as giants FC Barcelona fell down 2-1 to newly-promoted club Deportivo Alaves in a disappointing night for both players, staffs and fans.

After entering the new Liga season with two wins from two, Barça lost their third game of the league season by two goals to one to Alaves as Jeremy Mathieu’s strike was not enough to rescue the Catalans from an early season upset. Here is how the Barça players fared during the game, which is not so good.

BARCELONA 1-2 ALAVES – LA LIGA PLAYER RATINGS

JASPER CILLESSEN – 6.0
Started ahead of Masip and the injured Ter Stegen. Far from a bad game, looked very comfortable and made some good saves but was unlucky to concede twice on his debut, both the fault of the defence. Had a hand to the ball for Alaves second goal. A promising game.
ALEIX VIDAL – 4.0
Far from a good game for the Spaniard, had two chances to score but missed and just didn’t know what he was doing in both attack and defence. Could’ve done better to prevent Ibai Gomez’s winner but hesitated, a game to forget for him.
JAVIER MASCHERANO – 3.5
Was comfortable in the early stages but then everything crumbled and he ended up having one of his worst games in a long time. Was beaten by Deyverson for the first goal and made a terrible error in the box to gift Alaves the winner. Very bad game, hope he improves.
JEREMY MATHIEU – 5.5
Didn’t have a bad game overall but didn’t do well to help Mascherano in defence and was very shaky most of the time. Got the equalizer for Barça but then missed a chance ridiculously moments later when he should have done better even with his eyes closed.
LUCAS DIGNE – 5.0
Looked comfortable on the ball on the left but his link up with Neymar looked sterile. Played some decent football but then had a couple of horrific crosses in the final third.
IVAN RAKITIC – 4.5
Was a shadow of the Rakitic we saw vs Athletic Bilbao. Didn’t do much and provide no creativity, missed a chance in the first half, firing his shot well wide after great linkup by Alcacer and Arda.
SERGIO BUSQUETS – 4.5
Looked more defensive than attacking, didn’t have a good fame and that was one of the key reasons Barça struggled. Looked fatigued.
DENIS SUAREZ – 4.5
Poor game from the youngster who was started ahead of the just-recovering Andres Iniesta. Didn’t provide the creativity Iniesta would’ve provided, overall didn’t do much.
ARDA TURAN – 6.0
Started on the right wing and looked to be Barça’s best player in attack. Created some good chances and tried scoring himself. Beautifully won the corner from which Barça equalized, was subbed off for Iniesta in the second half.
PACO ALCACER – 4.5
Not the debut anyone would want. The former Valencia man found it hard to get into the game, not his fault as nothing was created for him and the Alaves crowded defence line was very solid to let him slip. Came close once though. Subbed off for Luis Suarez in the second half.
NEYMAR – 5.5
Returned to the starting lineup after more than 100 days away. Didn’t do bad. Tried provoking the Alaves defence with his tricks but they were much smarter than he thought. Could’ve scored with a header, assisted Mathieu for the goal.
SUBSTITUTES…
LIONEL MESSI – 6.5
Came on for Denis Suarez when the score was 1-1. Ended the game as Barça’s best performer and most lively player. Came close to scoring the equalizer in the final minute but his shot went inches wide.
ANDRES INIESTA – 6.0
Looked good after coming on for Arda Turan but couldn’t break the Alaves well coordinated wall.
LUIS SUAREZ – 5.0
Was brought on for Alcacer at 2-1 to try and perform magic but unfortunately, couldn’t.
