The Germans
will be facing Brazil in the final as the Dream have been cut short on the road
to the disappointment of soccer loving Nigeria who wondered the kind of lacklustre
performance been put up by the Dream Team VI who have been in imperious form
prior to previous games at the ongoing Olympics Games in Rio, Brazil.
The Dream
Team would now face the Honduras side who lost 6-0 to a Neymar led Brazil side
who looked like champions going into the finals. The Dream Team loss have left
Nigerians mute as we wonder what might have gone wrong with the vibrant U-23
side.
On this note we take a look at the possible lessons from the Dream Team
VI defeat against Germany.
The
Dream Team therefore has lost another chance of lifting the gold medal as Nigeria
bowed to the more organized German side who were pulling the strings in the Nigerian
defence as they got what they deserved in two unreplied goals.
It is very
painful for Nigerians with all the talent and experience of John Obi Mikel; the
skipper, Oghenekaro Etebo and Stanley Amuzie will have to settle for a bronze
medal even when we won silver in Beijing 2008 and gold in Atlanta 1996, Reality
is painful but we have to deal with it quickly as Honduras are waiting in
earnest for the bronze medal match.
Players like John
Obi Mikel was very impressive as we all saw a tree cannot make a forest as
Usman Mohammed and Ndifreke Udo (who was
replacing Azubuike Okechukwu following a yellow card picked up against Denmark
in the quarter finals last Saturday) failed to turn up in the game. At the
defence line, players like; Amuzie had a moderate game along with Shehu
Abdullahi but it was Troost- Ekong who caught the eye in a Nigerian team not
because of his skin (fair) colour but because of his wonderful output in the
game.
Emmanuel Daniel was impressive in goal as he came to the rescue on
several occasion as this players have given a little bit of hope ahead of Honduras
show down in the third place match.
A goal in the ninth minute set the tone
for the German victory as they rounded up the match on the stroke of eighty
nine minutes leaving no stone unturned in the clash. In 2015 U-20 world cup, a
certain kelvin Akpoguma (Nigerian born Germany youth international) captained
the German U-20 sides in the attendance of his Nigerian father who watched on
as they defeated Nigeria 1-0 in the match.
The flying eagles’ dreams were ending
by a solitary strike from Julian Brandt who is part of the current U-23 squad
that eliminated Nigeria at the Olympic Games. Even on the female side an Asisat
Oshoala a U-20 side who had Chinwedu Ihezuo and mid field talent Osarenoma Igbinovia
lost to the German side 1-0 in the final of the U-20 world cup in Canada after dominating
the tough and robust German side for much of the contest.
The Germans were very much
attentive and stuck to their game plan as they passed the ball into spaces in
the Nigerian defence. The Germans when not in possession form a freezing
formation of five payers long a straight line which makes it difficult for the Nigerian
side to break them down in transition.
They
master minded the most tactical and disciplined fouls as they escaped mostly
with a yellow card due to the perfection of those fouls notably in the first
period against the threatening Imoh Ezekiel in the left side of attack and John
Obi Mikel in the second half when the skipper was on transition down the opposing
half. It remains to be seen how the Germans would compete against the Brazil
side led by Neymar Jnr who are not lacking any form of inspiration in front of
their home supporters who will readily cheer the samba guys to victory against
the Germans bearing in mind the 2014 world cup defeat in the hands of the
tactful German side.
The
Nigerian team really struggled all through the game to assert themselves and so
therefore where on the receiving end defending one cross to the other as Seven
Bender and Lars Bender combined well in midfield with the trickery of Arsenals
Serge Gnabry who had a special date with Abdullahi Shehu on the left wings. The
Nigerian side lacked ginger and inspiration and that was their major undoing as
they failed to come into the game entirely in the match.
They were never
lacking in quality, it’s just unbelievable to see players like Usman Mohammed
and Sadiq Umar of AS Roma to name a few struggling in possession as the Germans
capitalize on their poor performance to nail them in the semi-final match thus
setting up a final with the host, Brazil come Saturday.
