Ex international, Tunde Disu has said that the Nigeria U-23 team and the technical crew mustn’t over celebrate their qualification to the knockout stages of the Rio Olympic Games Men’s football.
The team defeated Sweden 1-0 on Sunday thanks to Sadiq Umar’s 39th minute goal to qualify to the quarter final stages of the competition and will meet Colombia in their last group B game on Wednesday.
With six points already in the kitten, a draw or loss won’t have any significant effect on the team standing in the group.
The former Technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation and one time Flying Eagles coach told Soccernet.com.ng on Monday that the technical crew led by coach Samson Siasia must focus more on improving the team’s proficiency in front of goal.
“It’s a great achievement for the Nigeria’s U-23 team to have qualified to the quarter final of the Rio Olympic Games after beating Sweden 1-0. There is no doubt that the result will delight the technical crew after so much criticism from both the media and the football house prior to the competition, however, they shouldn’t over celebrate their passage to the next round,” Disu told Soccernet.com.ng
“Besides, I am more impressed with the work rate of Mikel Obi and Azubike Okechukwu in the midfield as they have done well keeping possession of the ball from our opponent. Again, I love the hunger and determination between the duo of Ogenekharo Etebo and Sadiq Umar in the attack, something which I believe will help the team against tougher opponents.
“At this stage, coach Samson Siasia must ensure he works on the goal scoring ability of the players because so that they can learn to take their chances whenever it comes their way.”
