Felix Mourinho was in and out of hospital while the football manager was at Chelsea.
Showbiz website Flash Vidas said the 78-year-old was admitted to Sao
Bernardo Hospital in his native Setubal an hour’s drive south of Lisbon
on Thursday.
He is said to have been diagnosed with pneumonia and reportedly has to remain in hospital until at least Monday.
A private medical team which reportedly cares for him round-the-clock
following his hospital release a few months ago is believed to have
decided he needed immediate hospital attention when he began to suffer
breathing difficulties.
His son, Manchester United’s new manager, was already in Portugal
with his family after flying in to Lisbon on Monday for a pre-season
break.
The 53-year-old was pictured at Lisbon Airport with his wife Tami and two children Matilde, 19, and Jose Mario, 15.
Matilde’s British boyfriend Danny Graham, whose two brothers were on
Towie spin-off show Life on Marbs, also flew to Portugal with them.
He is understood to have interrupted his family holiday in Troia, a
finger-shaped peninsula a ten-minute catamaran service from Setubal,
after being told of his dad’s new health scare so he could be by his
side in hospital.
Mourinho’s dad suffered a brain haemorrhage last May and was
readmitted to hospital weeks later when he diagnosed with a lung
infection.
His father’s health problems were cited as one of the reasons
Mourinho struggled during part of his time at Chelsea when he made
regular trips back to Portugal to be with him.
Mourinho revealed last October when asked about his father’s health problems that they had impacted negatively on him at first.
He said: “My dad is winning the fight.
“And he’s winning in a very secure way. He went to levels where nobody would expect. I think he’s a bit of a fighter.”
