Andres Iniesta lifting the Joan Gamper Trophy in 2015 |
FC Barcelona will play the annual Joan Gamper trophy on Wednesday, August 10 according to reports from Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo and the opponent for the tie is very likely to be Ajax from The Netherlands in honour of clubs icon Johan Cruyff who passed on during the course of this year.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the Gamper game must be held in a period when it won’t clash with the Spanish Super Cup which is set to take place on the 14th and 17th of August, hence all factors point that the Joan Gamper Trophy will be played on August 10, four days before the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup against Sevilla.
It is also likely that Barça will host Ajax in this year’s Gamper game in honour of Johan Cruyff who passed on in March. Cruyff was an icon and played a huge role in making both FC Barcelona and Ajax successful clubs. He played for both clubs and also managed them, his demise came as a hit in the bone for both teams and it is very likely that they hold a game in memory of the legend.
The Joan Gamper trophy is an annual friendly game played in August and hosted by Barcelona with the name in honour of Joan Gamper, a founder, former player and president of the Catalan club. 94,422 fans witness Barça run out 3-0 winners against AS Roma in last year’s Joan Gamper Trophy with goals from Lionel Messi, Neymar and Ivan Rakitic, it was the 50th edition of the tournament which saw Barça claim their 38th title and their third consecutive crown.
