Rafael Benitez has revealed that he has a clause in his contract if Newcastle get relegated from the Premier League at the end of the season.

The new manager admitted at his first press conference on Saturday afternoon that there is a break clause in his three-year deal allowing him to leave if the club don’t retain their top-flight status.

Asked on Saturday about a reported break clause in his contract that will allow him to leave if Newcastle get relegated, the Spaniard did not deny it.

“It is normal,” Benitez said. “But I am here to do my best and I’m convinced we can do well”.

Steve McClaren was given the boot and replaced by Benitez on Friday in the wake of a catastrophic run of results that has left the club second from bottom of the Premier League.

Benitez has been given the task of saving Newcastle from relegation to the Championship with 10 matches of the season remaining.

He will in the dug-out for the trip to Premier League leaders Leicester on Monday night, and will then have a further nine matches to keep the Magpies in the top flight.
