Nigeria rise in latest FIFA ranking

Nigeria have gone up three places in the latest rankings released by FIFA, the world football governing body.

The Super Eagles managed to accumulate 2.5 ranking points to collect a total of 542.5 points for the month of January.

The three-time African champions are now ranked 12th in Africa and 63rd in the world.

Their poor display at the 2016 African Nations Championship was expected to affect the country’s position in the rankings after Sunday Oliseh’s men crashed out at the group stages of the competition.

The importance of the match, strength of the opposition, and confederation, are some of the factors FIFA considers in arriving at a country’s eventual position in the rankings.

The top five countries in the world rankings features Belgium sitting at number one, followed by Argentina, Spain, Germany, and Chile taking the fifth position.
