Infantino elected new FIFA President

Italian Gianni Infantino has been elected the new FIFA President at the Friday 26 February FIFA extraordinary congress called to elect a new leader for the world football governing body following Blatter’s stepping aside in 2015 in the wake of corruption allegations.‎

Infantino, a dark horse at the start, ruffled feathers after he led in the first round of voting though he failed to hit the threshold required for an outright win.

The first round proved to be a two – horse race as Infantino topped with 88 votes to Salman’s 85 voteswhile Prince Ali bin Al – Hussein came a distant third with 27 votes as Jerome Champagne managed just seven votes.

In the second round, Infantino polled 115 of the available 207 votes cast in the second round of the exercise. Sheikh Salman, who had the support of CAF, as declared at the African Nations Championships, got 88 votes, Prince Ali al – Hussein got four votes while Jerome Champagne polled zero.

Infantino replaces Blatter, who led world football’s governing body since 1998 and stood down last year before later being banned from football for six years.
