Rodgers: Watford’s reliance on Ighalo, Deeney too much

The duo have been critical for Watford this so far.

The duo of Jamie Carragher and Brendan Rodgers has voiced concerns about the Hornets’ over-reliance on Odion Igahlo and Troy Deeney for goals following the 1-0 defeat at Swansea City on Monday.

The Nigerian striker has been responsible for 13 of Watford’s 25 Premier League goals this season.

Speaking after the match in the Monday Night Football studio, former Liverpool defender, Carragher, said: “We spoke all season about how great the front two have been and they have been but they [Watford] do rely on them too heavily. There’s only been one goal from open play all season, the first goal Watford scored of the season at Goodison [Miguel Layun in the 2-2 draw at Everton] where these [Deeney and Ighalo] haven’t scored or assisted and it just shows how influential they are.

“They’ve lost four on the bounce but if that goes to six, seven without a win and while they’ve been looking that way [up the table] they’ll start looking over their shoulder.”

Former Watford and Swansea boss, Rodgers, who controversially left Vicarage Road for Reading in 2009, said: “Especially when you’re a newly-promoted team. The two front boys, you can’t say talk anything negatively against them. It’s now up to the other boys in the team to provide that ammunition and score the goals, whether it’s the wide players, a bit more contribution from central midfield but the front two have been outstanding.”
