German Bundesliga club Mainz 05 have completed the signing of Karim Onisiwo on a free transfer.
The Austria-born forward of Nigerian descent penned the three-and-a-half-year contract that will keep him at the Coface Arena until the summer of 2019.
The former SV Mattersburg attacker scored 20 league goals in just 51 appearances for the Austrian side, making him a hot prospect in Europe and his transfer to a bigger league inevitable.
Standing at an imposing 188cm, Onisiwo is a physical specimen who can play either as a winger or a striker. The 23-year-old Austrian attacker joins Nigerian International, Leon Balogun, at the German side.
Onisiwo is international teammates with Bayern Munich wing-back David Alaba after earning a solitary cap for the Austrian national team in a friendly match when he came on as a substitute in a friendly against Switzerlandin November 2015.
David Alaba’s father and Karim Onisiwo’s father are also reported to be close friends.
Though born in Austria, Karim Onisiwo can still feature for the Super Eagles under FIFA’s eligibility rules.
