Luis Enrique Martinez Garca, FC Barcelona coach and former player was born on 8 may, 1970 in Gijon, Spain. The coach has gained world attention ever since becoming coach of Barcelona but little is known about this man.

Here are 10 things about Luis Enrique’s past that you should know

1. Former Spanish international Luis Enrique was a great attacking midfielder in the nineties winning both La Liga and Copa Del Rey three times with two clubs.

2. During his playing career, he played in all positions except Central Defender and Goalkeeper.

3. He started his playing career for Sporting Gijon from 1989 to 1991 when he left for Real Madrid.

4. He played for Real for 5 years before moving to Barcelona where he spent 8 seasons.

5. He famously scuffled with the great Zidane in an El Clásico match up which lead to a heated altercation between both sides.

6. Enrique was awarded the Barcelona captaincy by new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal in 2002.

7. That same season Barcelona finished 6th- their worst league position in fifteen years.

8. Luis Enrique was named by Pele in the FIFA’s list of top ‘125 greatest living footballers’ being one of only three spaniards to make the list.

9. As a manager, Enrique hasn’t had much success so far. Like Guardiola, he cut his teeth at Barcelona B before enduring a forgettable stint at Italian side Roma, and then guiding Celta Vigo to a modest ninth position in La Liga last season.

9. Enrique’s playing career spanned over 16 seasons, appearing 558 times and contributing 144 goals. For midfielders, a goal every 4 goals is a remarkable record.
