Manchester United failed to bounce back to winning ways after last weekend lose at Old Trafford as the Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw against Southampton in Saturday’s early Premier League game at St Mary’s Stadium.
The Red Devils began the encounter like a house on fire as they pressed the home team hard with consistent attacks from the duo of Andreas Pereira and Scott McTominay, who had goal-scoring chances to put the team ahead but for poor finishing.
United efforts finally paid off when in the 10th minute Daniel James pounced on a loose ball to score his team’s first goal. It was his third goal in the Premier League after scoring against Chelsea and Crystal Palace.
The visitor could have put the game to bed in the first half as Marcus Rashford, Scott McTominay and Juan Mata were presented goal-scoring opportunities but they failed to capitalize on it.
At the resumption of the second half, Southampton pegged Man United back thanks to a timely finished from Jannik Vestergaard, who headed a cross into the back of the net to the delight of the home supporters.
The Saints continued to pile more pressure on the United defence but could not get the needed touch to extend their lead.
All efforts from both teams to steal the three points proved abortive as they had to settle for a point apiece.
