Former Liverpool star and current Bayer Leverkusen manager, Xabi Alonso, has drawn comparisons between Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface and legendary ex-Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, Soccernet.ng reports.
Boniface has been in sensational form for Bayer Leverkusen, playing a key role in their recent UEFA Champions League victory over AC Milan. The Nigerian international netted the decisive goal, securing a 1-0 win for the Bundesliga side.
Speaking after the match, Alonso heaped praise on Boniface, acknowledging the striker’s potential to reach Drogba’s level of dominance.
“He has many qualities that could make him as formidable as Drogba,” Alonso stated. “His strength and the difficulties he creates for defenders are remarkable.”
The Spanish tactician emphasised that while Boniface has the physical attributes, there’s still room for growth in understanding his own abilities.
“He’s exceptional in tight spaces and thrives around the box,” Alonso added. “But he needs to be more assertive in attacking the box when opportunities arise.”
Alonso further highlighted that Boniface is still developing and that the club will continue to support him. “It’s a process. We need to guide him, push him, and help him make better decisions when it matters most,” the Leverkusen boss concluded.
When Leverkusen hosts Holstein Kiel at the Bay Arena over the weekend, the Nigerian attacker will look to continue from where he left off.
