Former Super Eagles and Borussia Dortmund forward, Victor Ikpeba Nosa, has backed his former teammate, Finidi George to succeed Jose Peseiro as Nigeria’s permanent coach, Soccernet.ng reports.
Finidi George is the head coach of defending NPFL Champions, Enyimba FC, and was Jose Peseiro’s assistant at the just concluded AFCON 2023 tournament hosted in Ivory Coast.
Following the expiration of the former Porto manager’s contract with the Nigeria Football Federation, Finidi George was drafted in as a stand-in coach for Nigeria’s friendly games during the March International break.
The 52-year-old’s coaching career with the Super Eagles got off to a flying start as they defeated Ghana in Morocco in a dominant display.
Speaking on the SuperSports’ Monday Night Football show, Ikpeba revealed he is proud of what his ex-teammate has set up despite being in charge for only a little while.
“I am happy with what Finidi is doing with the Super Eagles. I am in the system and I know what he’s doing. Remember that I am on the committee set up to do the right thing. We are doing the right thing that’s why we made Findi the interim manager instead of calling for other managers or names to be employed. Instead, we said the assistant should take over from Peseiro,” the 50-year-old said in quotes revealed by Complete Sports.
The former Real Betis striker revealed that his display against Ghana has earned him good points ahead of his counterparts in the race to become the permanent coach of the Super Eagles.
“From what I have seen from the players’ comments, it’s looking good for Finidi George. As I speak, I think it’s looking good for him. Mind you. I am not the decision-maker, I am one of the people who will advise the NFF, but it’s looking good for Finidi,” Ikpeba added.
Finidi will be in charge of the Nigerian team as they take on Mali in Marrakech, Morocco for the final game of March’s International break.
