Fulham manager Marco Silva praised Alex Iwobi’s sensational first-half strike but expressed frustration at the events leading to his side’s 4-1 home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers, Soccernet.ng reports.
The London club started brightly, with Nigeria international Iwobi delivering a moment of brilliance in the first half to give fans something to cheer about.
Speaking after the game, Silva expressed his disappointment and admitted disbelief at the wide margin of the loss.
“It was a strange game in the way it went,” Silva said post-match. “Of course, if you just look at the result, it’s a difficult one to take, but in my opinion, the score doesn’t reflect what happened throughout the game.”
Fulham began on the front foot and almost took the lead early through Antonee Robinson’s inch-perfect cross to Raul Jimenez, whose header rattled the crossbar. Moments later, Iwobi opened the scoring with an audacious left-footed strike into the top corner, showcasing his class.
“We started the game like we should, on the front foot, trying to command like we normally do. We created some chances even before the great goal we scored [by Alex Iwobi],” Silva acknowledged.
However, Wolves mounted a comeback, with Matheus Cunha equalising in style after latching onto Mario Lemina’s precise pass. The Brazilian forward then set up João Gomes early in the second half to put Wolves ahead, before Fulham’s misfortunes compounded.
Joachim Andersen’s injury forced Fulham to play with ten men, and Wolves took full advantage, scoring two more goals, including a long-range stunner from Cunha.
“We started the second half with two chances, but we conceded, and after Joachim had to come off, it was much more difficult for us, and they scored two more,” Silva explained.
Silva and his team will now aim to bounce back from this heavy defeat when they travel to face Tottenham in a London derby clash.
