Will they be patient with me?- Augustine Eguavoen speaks on permanently taking on Super Eagles coaching role

Eguavoen coached the Super Eagles at the AFCON 2021 tournament in Cameroon, shortly after Gernot Rohr was fired.

Interim Super Eagles coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has voiced out his concerns about taking on the coaching role permanently, Soccernet.ng reports.

The ex-Gent man took over the coaching reins after the negotiations between the Nigerian football federation and German tactician, Bruno Labbadia, fell through.

In his fourth stint in charge of the three-time AFCON winners, Nigeria cruised to a 3-0 win over the Republic of Benin, and played a goalless draw against Rwanda.

While talks of a permanent role have been surfacing, the 59-year-old has come out to clear the air, revealing he has some scepticism.

“The general question to the country , will they be patient with me? Because people now say this is Eguavoen’s fourth stint as the Super Eagles coach, well, agreed, but to let the people know, the first time I ever coached the Eagles in six months was in 2006.

Every other time, it was either two months, 2 games or 3. Then in Cameroon AFCON it was from December to March also covering the World Cup. Then people say fourth stint of Eguavoen coaching, it is not 100% correct.

How can people just say Eguavoen’s fourth stint with the Super Eagles, have I ever coached the team for straight two years?

All those saying fourth stints, should sit down and reflect, the only time I did six months was in 2006. Let us be objective In our criticizing,” Eguavoen said in an interview on Brila’s No Holds Barred with Ifeanyi Udeze.

Eguavoen’s first spell as a coach with the Super Eagles came between 2006 and 2007. Subsequently, he had short term stints in 2010, and in 2022.
