2025 AFCON qualifiers: Five players to watch as Super Eagles tackle Libya

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set to face the Mediterranean Knights of Libya today at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Soccernet.ng reports.

However, Nigeria’s talisman, Victor Osimhen, will miss the match due to an injury sustained during Galatasaray’s clash against Kasimpasa.

Despite Osimhen’s absence, the 2013 AFCON champions still have plenty of players capable of making an impact. Here are five Super Eagles stars who could step up and secure victory in the crucial doubleheader against Libya:

1. Ademola Lookman

Lookman has been in outstanding form for both Atalanta and Nigeria in 2024. After scoring a hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final and delivering standout performances in the 2023 AFCON tournament, he has emerged as a strong contender for this year’s African Player of the Year award.

The former Everton forward made his mark for Nigeria in the match against the Republic of Benin, netting two goals. He has also impressed at his club, scoring two goals and providing two assists for Gian Piero Gasperini’s men. His recent form makes him a key player in Nigeria’s quest for victory.

2. Victor Boniface

Although Boniface has struggled to find the back of the net for Nigeria, his club form has been remarkable. The Bayer Leverkusen striker has scored five goals and provided one assist since returning to club football.

With Osimhen sidelined, Boniface will be expected to bring his explosive form to the national team. Coach Augustine Eguavoen will rely on him to lead the attack and make a significant impact.

3. Stanley Nwabali

Nwabali has become a reliable presence for Nigeria since his impressive displays at the 2023 AFCON. The Chippa United goalkeeper has made key saves that have kept the Super Eagles competitive in matches. As Nigeria prepares for this crucial encounter, Nwabali’s shot-stopping abilities will be vital in securing a solid defensive foundation for the team.

4. William Troost-Ekong

The former Watford defender will look to continue his excellent form for Nigeria by anchoring the defence alongside Semi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey. The three-man defensive system, first employed during the 2023 AFCON, has provided stability, and Troost-Ekong’s leadership will be key in maintaining that structure.

5. Wilfred Ndidi

The Leicester City midfielder had an impressive showing during Nigeria’s last international outing, playing a crucial role in their demolition of Benin Republic.

After returning to club football, Ndidi registered two assists in Leicester’s 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace and put in a strong performance against Arsenal. He will be expected to carry this form into the doubleheader against Libya and help Nigeria secure the necessary points.
