Obafemi Martins’ son helps Monza to Copa Italia R16 on senior debut

The son of former Super Eagles striker Obafemi Martins, Kevin Martins grabbed an assist on his senior debut for Monza in their 3-1 Copa Italia victory over Brescia, Soccernet.ng reports.

Martins is one of the best strikers that has emerged from Africa. He played for top clubs like Inter Milan, Newcastle United, and Wolfsburg. He was quite successful during his stay in Europe before moving to the USA.

At international level, Martins was also brilliant, producing 18 goals in 42 appearances for the Super Eagles between 2004 to 2015.

The 39-year-old re2023tired from active football in 2021, but his son Kevin has taken up the mantle. Recall that in December, Soccernet.ng reported that Kevin had penned his first professional contract with Monza. Since then, he has been playing for the youth ranks.

The 19-year-old finally made his senior debut for Monza on Thursday, in their Copa Italia game against Brescia. Kevin started as a winger back and was very very solid in his position. The game eventually ended 3-1, and the youngster played every minute of the game.

It is a big step for the youngster as he can now dream of getting minutes in the Serie A.

Although Martins played for Nigeria, his son has adopted Italy as his first nation. Nonetheless, he can still switch allegiance and play for Nigeria since he hasn’t played for Italy’s senior team.
