Alex Iwobi helps Fulham to flying start in first pre-season game against Benfica

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi scored the solitary goal in Fulham’s 1-0 win over Benfica in their first game of pre-season on friday, Soccernet.ng reports.

Iwobi returned to action for Fulham when they took on former Portugal Liga champions Benfica at the Estadio Algarve. The Nigerian midfielder starred in a lineup that also had his Super Eagles counterpart Calvin Bassey start in defense.

The game was quite balanced from the start, with both teams trying to cancel each other out. Eventually, Benfica soon started dominating the fixture.

However, their dominance soon cost them, as Fulham capitalized on Benfica’s poor defense and scored. Adama Traore got the ball from midfield, sprinted forward and sprayed it out to Iwobi who was in space of the left side of Fulham’s attack. Then Iwobi laid the ball off for Robinson, who joined the attack in the box. Robinson ran forward and cut the ball back for Iwobi, who finished from aplomb from inside the box.

Both teams went at it, but it eventually ended 1-0 to Fulham after 90 minutes. Iwobi got 79 minutes of action before he was taken off for Martial Godo.

Meanwhile, Bassey also had a strong performance for Nigeria, as he played t;;;he entire fixture. Fulham’s next game is against Sevilla on August 5.
