Nigerians in South Africa warned ahead of Super Eagles vs Bafana Bafana AFCON semi-final clash

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are slated to tackle South Africa on Wednesday in the semi-final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tourney

Nigerians residing in South Africa have been cautioned against excessive jubilation if the Super Eagles emerge victorious over the Bafana Bafana in the ongoing 2023 African Cup of Nations, Soccernet.ng reports.

The advisory was issued by the Nigeria High Commission in South Africa, urging Nigerians to maintain law-abiding conduct before, during, and after the upcoming football match.

The High Commission in a statement expressed concern over potentially inflammatory online comments from some South African citizens.

Part of the statement reads: “The attention of the Nigeria High Commission Pretoria has been drawn to potentially inflammatory online comments made by a section of South African citizens against Nigerians living in the host country, largely influenced by the upcoming 2024 African Cup of Nations semi-final match between the Super Eagles and the Bafana Bafana on Wednesday, February 7, 2024.”

These comments included veiled threats related to ‘Nigerians cooking jollof rice’ and ‘showing pepper to Nigerians if the Bafana Bafana lose to Super Eagles.’

The advisory emphasized the need for Nigerians to be vigilant about their expressions, choose safe locations to watch the match, and avoid engaging in loud or provocative celebrations if the Super Eagles secure a victory.

The High Commission urged the Nigerian community to uphold good behavior and report any provocations to relevant authorities.

“Most of the comments consist of veiled threats against ‘Nigerians cooking jollof rice’ before the match, and ‘showing pepper to Nigerians if the Bafana Bafana lose to Super Eagles,’ among others.

“In this regard, the High Commission hereby advises the Nigerian community to be watchful of their utterances, be mindful of where they choose to watch the match, especially in public places, and refrain from engaging in loud, riotous or provocative celebrations should the Super Eagles win the match.”
