Akpom was unsung for Ajax on Thursday, but he was not satisfied with his performance
Nigerian striker Chuba Akpom has stated that he was not impressed with his performance for Ajax in their 3-1 win over AEK Athens in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, Soccernet.ng reports.
Akpom was the hero for Ajax on Thursday when they beat Greek giants AEK Athens 3-1 at the Johan Cruyff Arena. The Nigerian striker scored a brace to help the Godenzonen to victory.
Although Ajax were knocked out of the Europa League, Akpom’s effort ensured that they finished third in their group and guaranteed the Dutch giants a place in the Conference League.
However, Akpom was not entirely impressed by his effort, because he believes he could have gotten more goals. The former Middlesbrough man had nine shots on goal and missed three big chances.
“This was a day when I could have come back with the ball (scored a hattrick),” Akpom said, per nu.nl
“I’m happy that we won, but as a striker I’m angry about the last chances. I train on this every training session.
“Sometimes you can’t even sleep. I really enjoy scoring goals. I often act on instinct. But these times I had too much time to think.”
With his struggle for playing time at Ajax, Akpom has to start performing at his optimum level. Coach Van’t Schip currently favours Steven Berghuis over him, and proving his prowess in front of goal is the only way he can become a regular for Godenzonen.
