Finally! Sadiq Umar ends 448-day goal drought in spectacular fashion as Real Sociedad down Sevilla

Umar was yet to score since he returned from injury in the summer, but he finally ended his poor run on Sunday

Super Eagles striker Sadiq Umar scored his first goal for Real Sociedad since September 3 2022 to help them to a 2-1 win over Sevilla in the Laliga, Soccernet.ng reports.

Umar sustained an ACL injury last season that ruled him out of the campaign. However, he returned to action in the summer for Real Sociedad. But since his return, he has struggled to regain the form that saw him register 18 goals and six assists for Almeria two seasons ago.

Still, Real Sociedad coach Imanol Alguacil has kept the faith with the 26-year-old. He gave Umar a starting shirt when they welcomed Sevilla to Reale Arena on Sunday.

The txuri-urdin had a great start as they got in front just three minutes into the game via an own goal from Marko Dmitrovic.

Then, in the 22nd minute, Umar got his moment. He got the ball in midfield and made a forward run. The Nigerian striker was marked by two Sevilla midfielders, who he managed to peel away from his markers.

He then struck a rocket of a strike from over 35 yards out. The ball then flew into the top of Sevilla’s goal to make it 2-0.

That goal stole the sting from the game as both sides failed to register any major chances in the first half.

Sevilla started the second half well, piling the pressure on Real Sociedad, and they eventually pulled one back on the hour mark. Umar was taken off for Benat Turrientes in the 75th minute as coach Alguacil was looking to stamp his authority in midfield. Umar registered three goal attempts, two dribbles and 28 touches.

Eventually, Real Sociedad won the game 2-1, but it did not go without drama as Sergio Ramos and Jesus Ramos got sent off in the 88th minute.
