Waldrum led the team to a decent performance in Australia/New Zealand, and he wants to remain at the helm of affairs
Super Falcons coach Randy Waldrum has revealed that he wants to remain as the coach after their loss to England in the round of 16 of the World Cup, Soccernet reports.
Nigeria had a decent performance at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup despite losing out in the round of 16.
They finished with five points in a World Cup group for the first time and could have topped their group if they had won their last group game against Ireland.
They also put up a solid performance against England in the round of 16. They matched the European champions toe-to-toe and could have won.
Nigeria even had a one-woman advantage after Lauren James was sent off in the 87th minute. However, they failed to take their chances even after extra-time.
Eventually, England won the game 4-2 on penalties to advance to the quarterfinals of the World Cup.
Waldrum could have made history with the Super Falcons as he would have become the first coach to lead Nigeria to a World Cup quarterfinal in a 32-team tournament.
The American tactician had issues with the NFF before the World Cup regarding World Cup preparations and payment of allowances and bonuses.
There were talks that the NFF would let him go after the World Cup, but following their loss to England, he has stated that he wants to remain on the job.
“I am proud of my team[Super Falcons],” Waldrum said per Osasuo.
“I want to stay with this team and continue working towards the Olympics. But that is not a matter for me to decide.”
Nigeria will look to go back to the drawing board and prepare for the next Women African Cup of Nations.
