U20 WC: Italy overtake Nigeria’s Flying Eagles after edging five-goal thriller against Brazil

In a thrilling encounter at the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas, Italy showcased their prowess as they secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Brazil, propelling themselves to the top of Group D in the U20 World Cup.

The Italians displayed a blend of class and determination to surpass Nigeria’s Flying Eagles and claim the coveted group leadership.

Italy swiftly gained the upper hand in the match, stunning their opponents with three goals in the first 35 minutes.

The opening goal came courtesy of SPAL midfielder Matteo Prati in the 11th minute, followed by a magnificent brace from the talented Cesare Casadei, who is currently on loan at Reading from Chelsea.

Despite Italy’s commanding lead, Brazil demonstrated resilience and determination in the second half.

Their comeback efforts were spearheaded by Marcos Leonardo, who notched an impressive brace, creating a nerve-racking finish to the encounter. However, the Azzurrini managed to withstand the pressure and held on to claim maximum points.

Earlier in the day, Nigeria’s Flying Eagles had clinched a hard-fought 2-1 victory against the Dominican Republic at the same venue.

Falling behind to an early Edison Azcona penalty, Nigeria swiftly equalized thanks to a Guillermo Rosario own goal. Samson Lawal then delivered the winning goal midway through the second half, securing a crucial triumph for the Nigerian side.

With Italy’s triumph, they now sit atop Group D, leaving Nigeria in second place. The Flying Eagles will face the Italians in a decisive clash on Wednesday at the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas.

The victor of this eagerly anticipated showdown will secure a coveted spot in the Round of 16, intensifying the stakes for both teams as they seek to advance in the tournament.
