“There will be improvement”- NFF Chief says ahead of Super Eagles’ upcoming AFCON Qualifiers

Nigeria’s national teams have been underwhelming in recent years despite the amount of available talent

Nigeria Football Federation general secretary Mohammed Sanusi has promised that there will be a significant improvement in the Super Eagles when they play their penultimate 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sao Tome in June.

The Super Eagles who are ranked 83 places above Guinea-Bissau suffered a shocking 1-0 loss to the Djurtus in the first leg of their clash.

Nigeria were poor and found it hard to produce clear-cut chances. The loss ensured that they relinquished their spot at the top of Group A.

However, the Super Eagles bounced back in the second leg with a 1-0 win that took them to the summit of the group.

Nonetheless, the team still has a long way to go if Jose Peseiro wants to meet his target of winning the Nations Cup.

Nigeria’s next game is an away fixture against Sao Tome and Principe. And ahead of the match Sanusi, the general secretary has promised that the NFF is working assiduously to ensure there is a visible improvement in the team.

“We are working out logistics, you know Rome was not built in a day,” Sanusi told NFF TV. ” We are gradually doing things that will improve on what was done last time.

“The former board has done their best. They did well, but we want to improve on what was done.

“There is always room for improvement, and we have identified the areas that need improvement, and we are working on them.

“I can assure you that very soon, all the national teams will improve,” the NFF general secretary added.

Asides from the Super Eagles, most of Nigeria’s national teams are not doing well.

The Under-23 are struggling to qualify for the Youth AFCON, the Under-20 team won bronze at the last Nations Cup despite their average showing, and the Super Falcons have not inspired much confidence under Randy Waldrum.
