Napoli provide positive Victor Osimhen injury update as Liverpool tie looms

The Nigeria international faces the risk of missing the crucial Champions League meeting with Liverpool on Wednesday

Napoli sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli has downplayed the injury worries surrounding leading striker Victor Osimhen.

It emerged on Monday afternoon that Victor Osimhen had picked up a knock in the latter stages of Napoli’s 2-1 win at Lazio on Saturday.

The Super Eagles striker did not join team training but trained alone as Napoli prepared for their first Champions League match of the season against Liverpool on Wednesday.

But Napoli have moved to allay fears that Osimhen may have suffered a serious injury.

The club’s sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli has revealed that Osimhen only has a small discomfort and no injury.

There is still no guarantee that the former Lille lad will feature in the Liverpool tie, as Napoli are looking to manage the situation so as not to aggravate the knock.

Speaking in an interview with Kiss Kiss Napoli (via Tutto Napoli), Giuntoli said, “He (Osimhen) has a little discomfort in the adductor, there is no injury, it is a fatigue that he must manage together with the doctor and decide a few hours of the game with Liverpool if it is appropriate to risk or not.”

Osimhen helped Napoli qualify for this season’s Champions League by scoring 14 goals as the Neapolitans finished third in Serie A last term.

The Nigeria international has not featured in Europe’s premier club competition since leaving Lille two years ago.
