The Nigerian women fought like warriors on the night, but they just fell short at the end
Nigeria Sports Minister Sunday Dare has sent a message of encouragement to the Super Falcons after their penalty shoot-out loss to Morocco in the semifinals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The Super Falcons were on course to qualify for the final of this year’s WAFCON, but they were upended by host country Morocco, albeit in an unceremonious fashion.
Nigeria had to play a chunk of the second half with nine players because Rasheedat Ajibade and Halimat Ayinde were sent off.
However, the nine-time African champions displayed grit and determination pushing the game to penalties. The Super Falcons kept a strong defensive front despite the disadvantage.
Unfortunately, their efforts amounted to nought as they lost out 5-4 on penalties after Ifeoma Onumonu’s kick was saved.
Fans have come out to praise the team for their display, and the Sports Minister has joined his voice in encouraging the ladies.
“Your resilience, character, and management of the game must be commended,” Dare said as per OgaNla media.
“I salute your doggedness, commitment, and fighting spirit. For holding the Moroccans in front of over 45,000 capacity crowd you have once again displayed the never say die attitude of true Nigerians.
“Even when down to nine players after those red cards, you held your own. You are our champions. Nigeria is proud of you.
“It was a match I followed very keenly and I am so proud you displayed the Nigerian spirit. I am proud of this team, even in defeat”.
The Super Falcons have a chance to redeem themselves when they square off against Zambia in the third-place match on Friday.
