WAFCON 2022: Brilliant Ajibade leads Super Falcons to victory over stubborn Cameroon

The Nigerian women secured a World Cup ticket and a spot in the semifinals of the Women’s championship

Rasheedat Ajibade led the Super Falcons to the semifinals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nation after she scored a brilliant header that ensured a 1-0 victory over the Lionesses of Cameroon.

Nine-time African champions Nigeria looked to reaffirm their authority on the continent when they squared off against familiar foe Cameroon.

The Super Falcons had come out tops in four of their last five meetings against the Cameroonians, and they looked to continue with that good record.

The first half started very cagey, with both teams playing safe. Very few chances were created, but the Lionesses looked threatening on the attack. However, the first half ended goalless.

The second half started in an almost similar fashion. However, Randy Waldrum’s ladies grew into the game.

Onguene had a gilt-edged chance for Cameroon in the 53rd minute, but she fluffed her lines and sent a wayward shot off the target.

The Super Falcons soon showed champions stuff, as Ajibade jumped highest to head in a cross from Ifeoma Onumonu to put Nigeria ahead.

Onumonu could have added a second late in the game, but she missed a sitter.

The Lionesses showed hunger on the night but their effort fell short as Nigeria saw off all advanced to seal the 1-0 victory.

The Super Falcons trade tackles with hosts Morocco in the semifinals of the WAFCON.
