“That’s what we want to prove” – Super Eagles react to 10-0 demolition of Sao Tome & Principe

The Super Eagles were in their devastating best as they beat a 63-year-old record and set a new one in Agadir, Morocco

The last time Nigeria put 10 past any team was 1959 against Dahomey (now Republic of Benin) at the Kwame Nkrumah Cup.

Then the Red Devils, the Super Eagles dispatched their neighbours off and set a record that’d last more than six decades.

It would take a mixture of a downfall and a gentle ascent to set another one, which is proving to not just be a record, but a pathway to new convictions.

There’s a short time between a Nigerian football fan’s happiness and sadness. They can be the most unapologetic of fans at times and when they see what they like, they’re overzealous praise singers.

It must be very difficult to see a Super Eagles fan today who has seen the team beat any side by ten unreplied goals. That explains the atmosphere the scoreline has generated thus far. In Jose Peseiro, fans see their darling Super Eagles – free scoring, all-attacking and relentless.

Their spirit against the Sao Tomeans was positive and to the players, it is perhaps the beginning of greater things.

Some of their reactions explain their desire to place the team where it belongs as star actors in the victory, Alex Iwobi and Victor Osimhen tweeted about where the team is headed.

It may be just Sao Tome and Principe but beyond the victory, the constant willingness of the players to press and charge and find more goals explain this team may be on a new direction. Hopefully, they won’t crash-land and the players can achiever their true potential.
